A Guide to KRA Tax Obligations and Deadlines in Kenya

    July 20264-minute read

Running a business in Kenya is exciting, but keeping up with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) deadlines can feel like a balancing act. Missing these dates means facing costly penalties and interest that drain your hard-earned cash.

Monthly Employee & Payroll Deductions: If you run a team, these four primary statutory cuts must be deducted from your payroll every single month and sent over by the 9th of the following month: PAYE (Pay As You Earn), SHIF (Social Health Insurance Fund), NSSF (National Social Security Fund), and NITA (National Industrial Training Authority).

General Monthly Business Taxes: For standard operational trading activities, remember the 20th of the following month for VAT (Value Added Tax), Monthly Rental Income Tax (7.5%), and Excise Duty.

Fast-Track Obligations: Withholding Tax (WHT) must be remitted within 5 days of payment to a professional, and Withholding VAT (WHVAT) is remitted on a strict weekly basis by Monday of the following week.

Corporate Income Tax: Paid in 4 equal segments across the year—specifically due by the 20th day of your 4th, 6th, 9th, and 12th months. Any remaining final return balance must be settled by the end of the 4th month after your year-end.
